Besher Mohamed
NCI Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology
Dr Besher Mohamed is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist and NCI’s Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology & Endoscopy. With over 15 years of clinical practice across the UK, Ireland, and internationally, he brings a wealth of expertise in advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatology, and general gastroenterology.
Dr Mohamed holds specialist registration in Gastroenterology with the GMC and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London. He is also an active member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, and ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation).
His career includes substantive and senior roles at leading NHS trusts such as Surrey & Sussex, Frimley Health, East Kent, King’s College Hospital, and University College London Hospital, where he gained extensive experience managing complex IBD, advanced endoscopy, hepatology, and nutrition patients. He is highly skilled in both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including polypectomy, PEG insertion, haemostasis for GI bleeding, and advanced management of variceal bleeding.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Mohamed has a proven record in service development, clinical research, and medical education. He has contributed to multiple research projects, presented internationally, and trained generations of medical students, junior doctors, and gastroenterology trainees.
At NCI, Dr Mohamed provides clinical leadership and governance for all gastroenterology and endoscopy services, ensuring safe, effective, and innovative pathways that support NHS partners in tackling waiting lists while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
