Operating theatres are at the centre of elective and emergency surgical activity, and their effective functioning depends on a skilled multidisciplinary workforce. Non-medical theatre staff – including Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs), theatre nurses, recovery practitioners, healthcare assistants, and sterile services staff – are vital to safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care.
NHS Trusts face persistent workforce pressures in these roles, leading to underutilised theatre capacity, list cancellations, and extended waiting times. Without the right support teams, even when surgical and anaesthetic consultants are available, operating theatres cannot deliver activity at the level required to meet patient need.
