Endoscopy Services
Trusted processes for elective recovery across the NHS
Trusted processes for elective recovery across the NHS
Endoscopy is a core diagnostic and therapeutic service within the NHS, critical to cancer pathways and the management of gastrointestinal disease. It encompasses procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, and EUS.
Demand for endoscopy continues to rise year on year, driven by bowel cancer screening programmes, rising referral rates, and the need for surveillance in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and Barrett’s oesophagus. Many Trusts face significant backlogs, with delays in endoscopy leading to late cancer diagnoses, prolonged symptoms, and breaches of two-week wait and 62-day targets.
At NCI, we recognise that endoscopy is central to meeting both elective recovery and cancer pathway performance. It requires consultant-led delivery, robust governance, and compliance with national accreditation standards.
All services are delivered by Consultant Gastroenterologists, Colorectal Surgeons, or Upper GI Surgeons with extensive NHS experience. They are supported by endoscopy nurses, decontamination staff, and anaesthetists where sedation is required.
